Balsa Dust from FUN-MODELLBAU is an extremely lightweight, finely ground filler made from balsa wood for creating custom putty and filler mixtures. When combined with suitable binders, the consistency can be precisely adjusted—ideal for precise work in traditional wood model making.
Versatile Applications
As a Lightweight Filler
When mixed with epoxy resin, superglue (cyanoacrylate), or wood glue, it creates a particularly lightweight putty. This makes balsa dust a suitable alternative to conventional lightweight fillers such as microballoons.
For filling joints and gaps
When mixed with white glue, it can be used to cleanly fill fine joints and uneven areas in balsa wood and wood structures. Once dry, the compound can be worked and sanded just as easily as the surrounding balsa wood.
For thickening adhesives
Balsa dust can thicken liquid adhesives and alter their flow behavior. This helps reduce sagging on vertical or sloped surfaces, for example.
Suitable binders
- White glue / wood glue – ideal for wood-to-wood applications, slightly flexible, and easy to sand.
- Epoxy resin—produces a strong yet lightweight filler for applications requiring higher load-bearing capacity.
- Zapon varnish / quick-sand primer—suitable for very fine, superficial pores and minor irregularities.
