The Nieuport 28 (N.28C-1) was a French biplane fighter aircraft during World War I in 1918.
The aircraft was designed by Gustave Delage and first flew in June 1917. Opposite to the connection of the wings with a V-struts, as in the Nieuport 27, now two parallel struts are used. A powerful 160 hp (119 kW) Gnome 9N radial engine was used.
The plane should be used in large numbers in French and American fighter squadrons. However, the French Air Force canceled all orders and gave the SPAD S.XIII preference. Thus, the machines were at the American Expeditionary Force, delivered AEF. The AEF has received a total of 287 units.
It was the first plane, which was used by pilots of the AEF in World War I aerial combat. The second patrol use the AEF on 14 April 1918 were shot down two enemy machines. The pilots were Alan Winslow and Douglas Campbell of the 94th Aero Squadron. Although the Nieuport 28 was already considered obsolete and should be replaced by the SPAD S.XIII, American pilots were able to report a lot more victories than losses of the machine.
The machine was more manoeuvrable than the SPAD, but often had engine problems. The canopy could nosedive solve. Nevertheless, the machine of many American pilots such as Quentin Roosevelt, son of President Theodore Roosevelt and the flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker was flown.
There at the end of the war, a further 600 were ordered by the modified N.28A.1 USAS. The machines exhibited minor structural improvements and new Marlin MG. The aircraft were used primarily as training aircraft. Twelve machines went to the U.S. Navy to launch battleships. The last Nieuport 28 was retired in the 1930s from the Swiss Air Force.
