RAF SE 5A Balsa USA
Under the names of FE10 and SE5 (Scout Experimental 5) was built by Henry P. Folland, J. Kenworthy and Major FW Goodden developed at the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough two aircraft types for the installation of the new 150 hp (112 kW) Hispano-Suiza 8a V8 engine. There already numerous battle two-seater like the (BE2, the FE2 and RE8) had been developed.
The first prototype flew on 28 November 1916. [1] The engine was not yet ready for deployment and unreliable. The first two prototypes crashed. The test pilot Major F.W. Goodden came on 28 January 1917 killed when the wings broke off his SE5. The revised third prototype based on the SE5, however, proved exceptionally stable aircraft that survived extreme dives at high speed. Because of these properties, the SE5 has now been given as the optimal fighter aircraft in production.
The SE5 was armed one of the first British aircraft to a synchronized MG: The 7.7-mm (.303 inch) Vickers machine gun was mounted on the left side of the fuselage. On the upper wing in addition a 7.7 mm Lewis gun was mounted on a Foster mount that allowed a top targets, so that enemy aircraft could be attacked from below. So the machine was also the eventual failure of the still unreliable synchronization gear for battle. The first 25 aircraft had a semi-enclosed cockpit glass and the waiver of the later, and a wingspan of 8.53 m, which was later shortened. The cockpit was behind the wing, making it difficult to view on the nose at something, but otherwise visibility was good. For attacks on ground targets Cooper bombs could be mounted under the wings.
After 77 SE5 had been built, was the production of more powerful SE5a. to the most received a four-leaf propeller. It differed from the SE5 with a longer nose, radiator fins and extended exhaust pipes. Also the remote pilots often the headrest, to improve the visibility. From December 1917, the front struts of the V chassis has been reinforced. Payable with the introduction of a 200 hp (147 kW) Hispano-Suiza or Wolseley Viper engine (engine Hispano-Suiza with increased compression) were the initial problems were solved and the engine speed is increased by 45 km / h.
