1/4 Scale 13 S.P.A.D biplane
Precursor of the SPAD S.XIII were the French Nieuport fighters and the SPAD S.VII that was already in use since September 1916. These guys were inferior to the modern German Albatross fighter aircraft, so that the most famous French fighter Georges Guynemer demanded an uprated version.
Chief designer Louis BECHEREAU built thereupon armed with a gun and the S.XII S.XIII. In this zweistieligen biplane it was the development of SPAD S.VII. Both aircraft differed little from each other at first sight: the fuselage and wings were fabric-covered wooden structures with aluminum sheets in the front torso area. Upper and lower wings were of equal length and run without phased ailerons were attached to the upper wing and modified the empennage. The machine had a two-wheeled chassis, and tail skid.
However, her designer Louis BECHEREAU had worked at the SPAD S.XIII number of improvements, such as the slightly larger wingspan enlarged ailerons and the aerodynamically refined fuselage. Moreover S.XIII was equipped with a second machine gun. In addition, a more powerful engine was installed, a Hispano-Suiza 8B with reduction gear, which drove a wider propeller. Later also with the more powerful 235 hp Hispano Suiza 8BEc-engine was installed. This is already the excellent flight characteristics at the S.VII increased significantly. Thus the S.XIII was faster than the British Sopwith Camel and the German Fokker D.VII. Their stability had excellent dive characteristics. However, to reach that height was less maneuverable, particularly at low speed and landing difficult for beginners.
After the first flight on 4 April 1917 there was immediately ordered by the Aéronautique Militaire, and the end of May 1917 were the first to find S.XIII the Front.
The S.XIII showed impressive skills in use, so that about 10,000 units were ordered, but the absence of demand, the remaining deliveries canceled when the war ended.
The S.XIII came on 80 seasons of the French Air Force, in addition to including Escadrille 10 of the Belgian Aviation Militaire, eleven Squadriglie the Italian Aeronautica Militare, including Squadriglie 77a and 91a, the no. 23 Squadron of the British Royal Flying Corps, and at 16 Aero Squadronds of the United States Army Air Service France. The U.S. verfrachteten 435 893 procured their SPAD S.XIII to America and kept them in service until 1920, where they were fitted with 180 hp Wright-Hispano E engines.
The most successful Allied bombers on the SPAD S.XIII were René Fonck, Georges Guynemer, Léon Bourjade, Charles Nungesser, Jean Chaput, Ernest Maunoury, Francesco Baracca and Eddie Rickenbacker. Source: Wikipedia / spadS.XIII
